Motivational Interviewing Training

Dr. Triana’s Approach

As a practicing physician, Dr. Triana brings a real-world, practical perspective to Motivational Interviewing training in primary care. Her style is learner-centered and experiential. Trainees engage in multi-modal approaches to learning, which include skills practice, case study, discussion, reflection, feedback, and didactic. Trainees also reflect on the values that brought them into medicine and sustain their lifelong commitment to healing patients and their families. By the end of a training session, trainees leave with new skills and refreshed confidence.

Dr. Triana approaches training and development from a culturally informed, strengths-based perspective. Previous clients describe Dr. Triana as a true partner in healthcare transformation. Providers leave Dr. Triana’s trainings with a renewed commitment to their clinical practice and the skills to back-up their convictions. Dr. Triana has effectively trained behaviorists, chaplains, healthcare educators, lay people, medical assistants, nurses, physicians, and interprofessional teams. Her approach is effective across settings and populations. Her experience ranges from 1-1 real time coaching to large group trainings.

Every consulting relationship begins with Dr. Triana completing a comprehensive assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the unique strengths and needs of the healthcare system and clinical providers. Thereafter, Dr. Triana partners with the healthcare team to construct a training plan with clear outcome measures. All training is tailored to the particular needs of the system and its team members. Training services require ongoing customization as teams grow and develop. For a detailed menu of training options, please see below.

Dr. Triana trains from a bicultural worldview and offers services in Spanish and English.

The way MI was modeled throughout the teaching (not just during case examples but infused into the teaching style) helped me appreciate its efficacy/usefulness and appreciate the many ways it can be applied.
